Turkish bath or steam room — what is the difference?

This is the comparison people get wrong most often, because hotel brochures use the two words as if they were interchangeable. They are not.

A steam room is a single warm room saturated with steam, which you sit in for ten or fifteen minutes. A Turkish bath is a whole sequence that includes a steam room and then goes on to heated marble, a kese body scrub, a soap-foam wash and a massage. If a hotel advertises a 'Turkish bath' and what you find is a tiled room with steam in it and nobody in attendance, you have found a steam room.

Why the confusion exists

Because a steam room is genuinely part of a hamam. The programmes on this site pass through one on the way to the marble, and it does real work — it softens the skin before the kese.

The problem is only with the naming. A steam cabin in a hotel wet area is a component of a hamam sold as the whole thing.

How to tell what you are being offered

  • Is there an attendant who will scrub and wash you? If not, it is a wet room, not a hamam
  • Is a kese mentioned? That is the giveaway word
  • Is there a foam wash?
  • Is there a large heated marble slab to lie on?
  • Is it a sequence of stages, or a single room you sit in?

If your hotel already has a steam room

Then use it — and understand that it is not the same purchase. What the programmes here add is the part that needs a person: the scrub, the foam wash and the massage.

Hamam or hotel spa goes further into that, and the price page sets out exactly what the fee covers.

Questions

Is a steam room included in a Turkish hamam?

Yes. Steam room and sauna access are part of the basic programme in all four regions here.

My hotel has a 'Turkish bath' — is that the same?

Often it is a steam room without an attendant. The test is whether anyone will give you a kese scrub and a foam wash; that is what makes it a hamam.

Which is better if I dislike strong heat?

Both are far cooler than a sauna. In a hamam you can also skip the steam room and go straight to the marble — tell the attendant when you arrive.
