What to wear and bring to a hamam
The packing list is three items long, and everything else is waiting for you when you arrive.
Wear or bring swimwear — it is worn throughout and guests are never naked — plus a change of underwear and a hairbrush or comb. The hamam provides the peştemal wrap, a towel and slippers. Leave jewellery and valuables at the hotel; there are changing facilities for what you do bring.
Bring these three things
- Swimwear or a bikini — worn for the whole session, including the scrub and the foam
- A change of underwear — you will be wet, and you will be glad of it
- A hairbrush or comb — soap foam and long hair need reuniting afterwards
These are provided
- A peştemal — the thin woven wrap worn over swimwear
- A towel
- Slippers — the floors are wet marble and this matters more than it sounds
- Changing facilities for your belongings
Leave at the hotel
Jewellery, watches and anything valuable. Not because anything happens to it, but because there is genuinely nowhere sensible for it during a foam wash, and heat and soap are unkind to some metals and stones.
Bring as little as you would to a pool.
Glasses, contact lenses and long hair
- Glasses — steam up instantly and are a nuisance on the marble. Leave them with your things; the attendant will guide you
- Contact lenses — take them out. Soap foam goes over your head at one point
- Long hair — tie it up until the rinse, then let it down for the wash-through
What to wear on the way
Whatever is comfortable. You will be collected from your hotel and brought back to it, so there is no need to dress for anything. Loose clothes are more pleasant to put on afterwards than tight ones — you will be warm for a while.
If you are going to be in the sun afterwards, bring sunscreen and use it. Freshly exfoliated skin burns more easily.
