What happens in a Turkish hamam, step by step

Nobody explains this to you at the door, and it is the single thing first-timers most want to know. So here it is in order, from the vehicle to the vehicle.

In order: hotel pickup, change into swimwear, sauna, steam room, warm up on the heated marble, the kese body scrub, the foam wash and foam massage, a relaxing oil and aroma massage, then a shower, dressing and the ride back. It takes about 2.5 to 3 hours door to door. The exact order and timing vary by hamam and by how busy the session is.

1. The pickup

An air-conditioned vehicle collects you from your hotel. We confirm the time with you before the day, because it depends on your hotel and on the session — we do not print a clock time on this website, because a printed time is wrong for somebody.

Bring swimwear, a change of underwear and a hairbrush. That is the whole packing list; everything else is waiting for you.

2. Arriving and changing

You are shown the changing facilities and leave your things there. You change into your own swimwear and are given a peştemal — a thin woven wrap — a towel and a pair of slippers. The floors are wet marble, so the slippers matter more than they look.

This is the moment to say anything you need to say: a same-gender attendant, a health condition, a child in the party, a sore shoulder. Say it now rather than on the marble.

3. Sauna

Dry heat first, for as long as is comfortable. The point is not endurance — it is to raise your body temperature and open the skin so the scrub has something to take off.

If dry heat does not agree with you, skip it and go to the steam. Nobody will mind, and the rest of the sequence works perfectly well without it.

4. Steam room

Then wet heat. It is gentler on the airways than a sauna for most people, and it softens the skin further. You will start to sweat properly here, which is the signal that you are ready for the marble.

5. Warming on the göbektaşı

You lie on the large heated marble slab in the middle of the hot room. Ten minutes on your back doing nothing is part of the treatment, not a queue — the heat coming up through the stone is what makes the scrub work.

6. The kese

The attendant works over you with a coarse mitt called a kese, section by section. It is firm. It is not painful, but it is not subtle either, and the first time is a surprise.

What comes off is dead skin, in grey rolls, and everybody's does this — it is not a comment on your hygiene. It is also why the hamam is worth doing at the start of a holiday rather than the end: you get the days that follow it.

More detail: the kese scrub explained.

7. The foam wash and foam massage

Then the foam. Soap is worked through a cloth into an enormous quantity of lather and poured over you by the handful, and the attendant washes you through it — shoulders, back, arms, legs.

This is the part everybody photographs and nobody can describe. It is warm, it is loud, and you cannot see very much. When it is finished you are rinsed with bowls of warm water from the kurna.

More detail: the foam massage explained.

8. The oil and aroma massage

A relaxing massage with oil closes the ritual, and it is included in the price on this site. It is a relaxation massage, not a clinical or sports treatment.

If you want longer, or a different style, the hamam sells that on the day — it is not part of what you book here, and we do not quote a price for it. What the extras are.

9. Shower, dress, sit down

A proper shower, then dressing, then — and do not skip this — sitting down for a few minutes. You have been in heat for a while and you will feel it when you stand up. Drink water. Tea and cold drinks are sold at the hamam and are not included in the price.

10. Back to the hotel

The same vehicle takes you back to the same door. Total time away, about 2.5 to 3 hours.

You will sleep well.

Questions

Does the kese hurt?

No, but it is firm and thorough rather than gentle. Tell the attendant if you want less pressure — they adjust it without any fuss.

Can I skip the sauna or the steam room?

Yes. If heat does not agree with you, skip that part and go straight to the marble. Tell the attendant when you arrive.

What time will I be collected?

It depends on your hotel and on the session, and we confirm it with you before the day on the number you give when booking. We deliberately do not print a pickup time.
